Modern Languages Essay Competition
The Minds Underground™ Modern Languages Essay Competition is aimed at students in Year 12 (though we welcome younger applicants). The competition provides students with an opportunity to engage in contemporary debate, attempt university-level research, hone their writing & argumentative skills and prepare for university interviews. Questions are designed to be applicable for those considering applying for any of the Modern Foreign Languages. Entrants must choose 1 question to answer.

Hint: Discuss the nuances of human language, cultural context, and the limitations of AI in comparison to human understanding.

What is lost when translating literature from one language to another?
Hint: Consider how idioms, cultural references, and emotional tone can be altered or lost in translation, using examples from literature in various languages

How does multilingualism shape identity in a globalized world?
Hint: Explore how language influences cultural identity and self-perception, drawing on examples from literature, film, or personal experience in Spanish, German, Italian, or other languages.

What’s the prize for winning the Modern Languages Essay Competition?

When is the deadline for the Modern Languages Essay Competition?
Entries must be submitted by 11pm UK time on March 3, 2025.
Who can enter the Modern Languages Essay Competition?
Open to all UK and international students! It’s particularly recommended for Year 12 students or gap-year students reapplying to university, though younger students are also welcome.
Can I get support for the Modern Languages Essay Competition?
Yes! Work with one of our Modern Languages Essay Competition mentors to gain support in analyzing questions, conducting research, and structuring your response.
